The Art of Making Beer

A special Japanese craft beer positions itself in the Philippine market

In Japan, ‘monozukuri’ is that unique, truly Japanese word for “the art of making things.” Referring to the Japanese manufacturing style, or the art, the science, and craft of making things, monozukuri does not have a direct English translation. It is best experienced and seen up close.

With the entry of a new Japanese-based brewing company, we can begin to understand monozukuri a bit more.

John Chesen, senior partner and director of sales and business development at Baird Brewing Company, explains that it was his and Bryan Baird’s great love for Japan and its culture that united them. As classmates in Johns Hopkins University, the two thought they would come back to Japan one day as State Department officials or as bankers, never really as beer brewers.

With Baird Beer, John promises that each sip will yield a different insight as you finish your bottle and the room temperature starts to affect your drink—unlike commercial beers, which might taste good but will have the same personality all throughout.

Baird Beer, while it can now be experienced in the Philippines, also provides a taproom experience in Japan with their Baird Harajuku Taproom, which offers yakitori, Izakaya-style dishes; the Baird Bashamichi Taproom, which offers low and slow smoked BBQ as the pairing; the Baird Nakameguro Taproom, which offers that classic beer partner, pizza; and the Baird Takadanobaba Taproom, which is classic Japanese pub fare in a homey setting.
